Re: What are you playing?
I've been wanting to play it because it references some Kentucky cave mythology that dovetails with my own interests (there's a short chapter in my book about Mammoth Cave and its connection to the history of text-adventure gaming and the development of the early internet) and because of our mutual friend who made the music, of course!

Sounds like an excellent use of quarantine time!

If you are a fan of Breath of the Wild, perhaps you might also enjoy this complete Latin translation of the NES classic Zelda II: The Adventure of Link?
Re: What are you playing?
I hope that earned someone a PhD.
Re: What are you playing?
This is VERY nerdy, VERY silly, and 100% DELIGHTFUL
Re: What are you playing?
I have been playing the card game called "Dominion", which has a free online version here: https://dominion.games/
It was easier to pick up and less confusing than I initially feared. I only started playing a few days ago and already feel like I have a good enough sense of it to start reasoning about various strategies, etc.

Re: What are you playing?
very predictably working in game dev has made actual gaming a very mixed pastime for me. sometimes i get super super in, more than ever, and sometimes i get exhausted trying to analyze and play at the same time. plus i'm constitutionally an explorer/semi-completist type of gamer which inherently time-consuming. backlog is a chonk
in short, land of contrasts etc but BOTW is my fave in recent years but i still need to finish it, and untitled goose game is the only game i've finished in, god at least a year? literally in one sitting too lmao

oh luigis mansion 3 is a delight that i've been able to pop in and out of whenever
and it's pc-only but kind words (lo-fi chill beats to write to), in addition to the spectacular title, is by all accounts legit and heart-warming if you're into that sort of thing

semi-cross post:
good games for good cause: there's a jumbo itch.io game bundle and all proceeds are split between NAACP legal funds and community bail funds
even if the other 7 3 9 GAMES were garbage, minit, oxenfree, and night in the woods are absolute gems. minit in particular should've gotten a shout-out in my earlier post w/r/t small number of games i've had time to finish the past few years + games i absolutely adore

Re: What are you playing?
I want to recant my earlier statements about Animal Crossing being tedious. I crossed some kind of associative mental threshold and I'm now really attached to my little zones inside the game. I like that it doesn't give you everything all at once and that it's designed to be lived with over time; also that the game is different depending on the time of day you play it. If anyone else On Here is an Animal Crossing person let's share our codes! I have yet to visit anyone else's island.

Molly! We gotta play Hanabi https://hanabi.live/ it’s a weird site but Fun. I bet we can figure out timezones to play

Woah! Have you heard of this one?

You drive a bus from Tucson to Las Vegas in real time. From Wikipedia:
Considered by Penn to be the "best part" of the collection, Desert Bus is a simulation trick minigame and a featured part of Electronic Gaming Monthly's preview. The objective of the game is to drive a bus from Tucson, Arizona, to Las Vegas, Nevada, in real time at a maximum speed of 45 mph (72 km/h). The feat requires eight hours of continuous play to complete.
The bus contains no passengers, there is little scenery aside from an occasional rock or bus stop sign, and there is no traffic. The road between Tucson and Las Vegas is completely straight. The bus veers to the right slightly, and thus requires the player's constant attention. If the bus veers off the road it will stall and be towed back to Tucson, also in real time. If the player makes it to Las Vegas, one point is scored. The player then has the option to make the return trip to Tucson for another point, a decision which must be made in a few seconds or the game ends. Players may continue to make trips and score points as long as their endurance lasts. Although the landscape never changes, an insect splats on the windshield about five hours through the first trip, and on the return trip the light fades, with differences at dusk, and later a pitch black road where the player is guided only with headlights. The game cannot be paused.
The game was designed to be as inoffensive as possible to prove the point that not all video games were corrupting influences. Penn Jillette commented in his radio show that the overly realistic nature of the game was in response to Janet Reno's comments in support of the moral panic about violent video games at the time (see Video game controversies). He also stated that there would have been a prize for the person or group to get the highest score in the game, also substantiated by the various Desert Bus contest materials prepared for the release of the game. Penn said that the prize "was going to be, you got to go on Desert Bus from Tucson to Vegas with showgirls and a live band and just the most partying bus ever. You got to Vegas, we're going to put you up at the Rio, big thing, and then, you know, big shows."One player used a tool-assisted emulator, managing to obtain up to 99 points, although their claim that this is the maximum the game allows might have been an April fool's joke. A run of this length would have taken 33 days to complete in real time.

Two days ago we biked to a nice park in Pasadena and played the Finnish "throwing game" Mölkky. This is my favorite outdoor game, throwing or otherwise.
Re: What are you playing?
IT'S CALLED MÖLKKY!!!
Re: What are you playing?
Wow, RCH, what do you have to do in the game to get to such a beautiful place? I'm tempted.

m o l l y It has to be all caps?
Re: What are you playing?
I wanted to shout it. Also, Korn(e) sometimes calls me that (aaaaaaw).
Re: What are you playing?
I want to play MÖLKKY as long as I get to play in my best Finnish accent.
"I äm queen öfs the skittles!"
"I äm queen öfs the skittles!"
Re: What are you playing?
- marijke, I like this "Threes!" I'm working hard to remember to match up my 1's and 2's.
- meadows, the more progress you make, the more different types of blocks and treasures you can build with. You have to fly around the universe and take aliens' furniture and fight toads and stuff. But then you can collect many plants and animals, it's so cute.

Re: What are you playing?
I’m glad you like it RCH! Your underwater world is so beautiful.
I like all of the tetris-like, trance-inducing games. I guess that’s kind of what piano playing is like for me too!

Re: What are you playing?
Anyone have a recommendation for an online game that is fun to play with other humans and is not a digital version of a classic board game? Looking for fun ways to interact with local friends I don't see
@RCH I was looking for one I thought you recommended recently but couldn't find anything!

Re: What are you playing?
I also discovered two-suit spider solitaire recently and it might be giving me repetitive strain injury (RSI). Watch out!
Re: What are you playing?
I would like to gauge interest for a special gaming event.
Would anyone be interested in joining me for a special Zoom show of my video game projects?
It would be like twitch, except instead of demonstrating how a game works, I will host a zoom tour of some of my building and development projects (e.g. forest gardens in Don't Starve, extensive farm residence in Starbound). It's really like if I had a special dollhouse to show off.
I would like to schedule 30-60 minutes on a weekday evening, if there is any interest.

Re: What are you playing?
I am interested in purchasing Starbound. A home tour might be just what I need to make the 15 dollar (and more importantly, hours of time) plunge.
Re: What are you playing?
Molly, let's do a 1:1 Starbound tour with Q&A!
I think I played it for the first time in 2014 and may have logged about 1,000 hours ;-}
It's just this perfect little dream world where sound, physics, and art merge to make an immersive play land. You don't even have to follow a strict path. You can just decide you're going to drill down to the center of a planet and then fill the hole with water or statues or something.
Is anyone interested in a Stardew Valley show? It deserves its own 30-minute tour!

fun! sure!
Re: What are you playing?
Yay! I am coordinating with Molly to find some possible dates (how about 3 possible dates/times Molly?). My idea is to create a public Zoom link and then stream my screen.
Claire, would you be interested in hosting the Zoom meeting in your office? You have seen how my old computer can lag so I shouldn't host the meeting myself. You will love my show and tell 0:-)
Things to show you all
- Extensive gardens
- free-rage chicken farm
- Manor installed in a hill, featuring private aquariums of rare species
- Jellyfish aquarium
- Mushroom farms
- Modern+Farmhouse live/work space with full intergalactic tenancy

Oops I might actually have meant Stardew Valley! Maybe I can learn the difference!
Time zones are a thing. Most weekday evenings can work for me but mornings might be tough for y'all...

Re: What are you playing?
Here's a joker card, but what do we think about Tuesday for 30 minutes sometime between 11AM to 3PM PST?
This is now a *Stardew Valley* tour. This is an easy easy to love game that I think everyone will appreciate. I can show my chickens, public art gardens, and my milpa-inspired island forest farm.

Re: What are you playing?
Love it. I think 11 PST is 8pm here. Earlier is ideal but I can swing it!
Re: What are you playing?
Sally and Claire, what do you think? I could do earlier, is that gonna be a good thing? We can have tea and look at a tiny, funny, very relaxing farm world with mellow and cheerful music. It's part of a healthy well-balanced morning breakfast-time routine.
