Dismantle Distributed Virtual Thanksgiving -- Starts NOW!

Post by yourfriendclaire »

I've made cranberry sauce with some leftover fig jam from this summer's bounty. Joni and I brought a giant vegan turkey we special-ordered from our favorite fake-meat craftsman, Kevin, who runs a great vegan Vietnamese joint out in Reseda, California.

It's a beautiful crisp autumn day outside, and there's a giant crock of mulled wine on the stove. The house smells amazing. Anyone want a cup?

Also for Thanksgiving I made some of the board’s most beloved dishes: kombucha, “trash water” and “THE potatoes”

A box of hand-dipped beeswax taper candles just arrived. I can bring a few of those.

Also been wondering where to wear this red lipstick and the Liz Claiborne high-waisted silk velvet pants I found at the goodwill. I’ll also be wearing Egyptian musk thanks to @rch.

Homemade kombucha please!

This Chopin piece is just about cleaned up if anyone is interested in after dinner entertainment...

Winter 2020 is really the bong zeitgeist! We just got one, and it seems everyone else has either dusted off theirs or made the plunge. If we're partaking, let me just open the cabinet and grab one of our (many) jars of homegrown grass. Let the festivities begin!

I bought one last year but it was an impulse purchase just to see if I liked it and the only cheap thing was sooooo painfully ugly. Predominantly yellow trippy swirl that turns brown immediately, and a bulbous, penis-like shape. (no offense to all the peni in the world, it's just not what I want from a bong)
New one is cute and doesn't look like a trippy dick.

I've never owned a bong, I think it might be time. I don't seem to really get high off vaping and sometimes you don't want an edible.

I've been living the Bong life for a while. First one (since my 20s) was an impulse purchase when I realized that what was once an expensive thing to get was now something I could easily afford.
Usually we go to my partner's family in Santa Barbara for Thanksgiving but this year we are staying in Portland. I'll be making a big feast for Anna and I: Brined Turkey, mashdapatos, cran sauce, pumpkin pie, 2 gravys, green beans and maters, and dressing.

Aha! Never had green beans with maters for Thanksgiving. Seems like an acidic mater would cut through the grease of other side dishes. wise.

A la carte delights:

Castelvetrano olives
Feta in salt brine
Persimmon and kiwi
Rye cracker with cream cheese, salmon candy, and fresh dill
Kale chips

And how about some caramelized garlic and vegetarian mushroom gravy to go with the main course?

I have no fucking clue what Sasha and I are going to eat for this day of colonization/genocide celebration.

I sort of want scallops and mashed potatoes and some sort of vegetable. Then nog and whiskey.

I haven't had a drink in 50 days and not sure if I should break for the holiday or not. Maybe a glass of champagne and some oysters early in the afternoon? I feel proud of my streak and can't tell if I should break it or not.

Dinner is coq au vin, mashed potatoes, fennel salad. Pumpkin pie and coffee for dessert.

Fun! Will you share the recipe?

We did sushi Thanksgiving last year. I tried to get innovative with the concept and made tempura stuffing balls, among other unholy fusions. When we got home I barfed! True story.

If there is any success, I will share the recipe.

I tried to make sushi with fried rice a few weeks ago and it was horrible...but maybe the problem was that it was frozen Trader Joe's fried rice. Perhaps a custom blend would work better

@alex you could try arborio rice? I usually cook it on the dry side so it's more like sushi rice, but if you use more water maybe it could glue together the fried rice.

I will bring my aforementioned corn pudding, a few bottles of grapefruit kombucha, store-bought pão de queijo, cold green bean salad tossed with lemon and shallots, a gluten-free pumpkin pie from the farmer's market, and some weed tincture.

YUM, y'all!

Will you believe I still don't know what I'm going to cook today? We just got our CSA so I was gonna freestyle some stuff. Maybe potatoes in an herby sauce, and we have some puff pastry in the freezer so I was thinking some kind of savory veg tart a la this:

https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/squas ... onion-tart

I just went outside and saw my neighbors have set up a twenty-person outdoor dining situation in their backyard, EEP!

Nora was on the precipice of “if you don’t go to the grocery store right now to buy one can of cranberry sauce, it means you don’t love me” but I fed her delicious antipasti and talked her down!

It sounds like all of our family members are staying home and doing household-only harvest feasts, as are my neighbor Steve and his people.

Last night I dreamed that all of my family were together in a huge cabin. The day was glorious and I could feel such a healing warmth from the beautiful, pink-orange sun.

Everyone is doing great Thanksgiving jobs.

I decided last minute that I was a little sad about it so I made a tray of roasted potatoes, carrots and red onions that we ate with mustard and a just finished batch of kraut. Then I made THE (friend of the board @tim's) berry crumble with a bag of berries I had burning a hole in the freezer. It is gooooood!

Everyone is making such nice things to eat.

Between myself and my mom, we had 15 dishes on the table, a true record feast. She made our traditional dishes of A Whole Roasted Turkey, green bean casserole, stuffing, and mashed potates. I produced supporting dishes such as mushroom gravy, orange-cranberry sauce, brussels, kale chips, and mango-persimmon relish.* She served us Pinot Grigio with ice cubes, it was pretty cute.

It’s been such a flashpoint year and we live pretty humbly. Our family lost my aunt to covid a couple months ago, and another relative died a few weeks ago. My mom just learned it’s gonna cost $700 to get her headlight fixed from hitting a deer the other day. She was laid off for a few months this year. But we have enough and it makes me happy that we’ll be able to remember that we put ourselves together a sweet lil 2020 harvest feast.

*At the last minute I decided to make a half-serving of Caesar salad as a fresh relish, that ruled

I have also never had it! But as I’ve mentioned on this board previously, I’m casserole-curious.

How’s the leftover scene popping? We made little breakfast potato pancakes with our leftover mashed potatoes yesterday, that was fun. Then polished off my autumnal caramelized onion and squash tart with bowls of cauliflower-miso-mushroom soup. Fall!!

re: vegan caviar, it is weird and good and freaky

The basic premise is: make any kind of flavor broth you want (Seaweed etc for ocean flavor, but we just did spicy tamari yuzu) and add agar agar, then drizzle it into cold cooking oil. It forms little bubbles like when you pour vinegar into oil, but the agar agar makes it firm up so you have like little boba tea balls of flavor.
