Favorite snacks.

Post by m o l l y »

I want your snack ideas! What do you eat between meals?
I have been barreling through what I thought was way to much dried mango. I was clearly wrong.

I'll start with two kinds of bread based snacks I learned about while living abroad because in Europe, people still eat bread:

1) My favorite snack I learned in Madrid - Spanish breakfast.
Make a piece of toast. Cut a good tomato in half and grate it on the large holes of a box grater all the way up to the skin, which you toss. Drizzle good olive oil over your toast. Spoon your tomato guts over that, drizzle olive oil AGAIN. Salt it. Devour.
*For the adventurous: Peel a clove of garlic and rub that shit all over your toast before you do anything else.

2) I basically never do this but I Love that grown up Belgians do. Take a chunk of chocolate and put it on a spoon. Lower that spoon gently into your coffee and forget about it for 30 seconds or a minute. Take a piece of soft fresh bread and raise that spoon out of your coffee. The chunk of chocolate should still be there but melted. Casually spread that over your soft fresh bread as if it were a normal thing for a grown-up to do while reading the paper. Enjoy.

These are both fabulous. I eat bread like a motherfucker, never doubt it.

I have weird eating habits where I basically ONLY eat snacks, and then I eat a huge dinner. This is how my body wants to be so I let it. My main go-to snack is a cut up apple with peanut butter in a little dish for dipping. I eat this basically every day (so long as there are apples in season or from cold storage, which is almost year round). In high summer I substitute yogurt and berries maybe with a drizzle of maple syrup. I also love a straight-up plate of cheese and crackers. None of these are fun or fancy like yours.

I’m not a huge snacker but I like a dill pickle fresh from the jar in the fridge; a jolt of cold briny energy!

I also eat apple and peanut butter all the time! Also, apple and good cheddar.
A carrot and hummus. Toast with butter and radishes.

Snack dinner is my favorite meal- put all this on a plate with some olives, some almonds, chunk of chocolate, piece of fruit, call it a day!

Goldfish crackers
Cherry Pop Tarts
Carrots
Fresh mozzarella and crackers with BBQ sauce
A tart, crisp apple like Fuji or Gala
Popcorn*
Toast with cream cheese and jam
Olives

*I love to make fancy-dressed popcorn... I put tons of spices, especially curry powder and dill, into a coffee grinder to make the finest powder... Sometimes I melt butter and jam in a pan to make a fruity caramel...

Molly you rock at hosting this thread.

Rich, some ideas just for you:
Plain chili flakes or plain Sichuan peppercorns, weird but satisfying!
Egg cooked just right in the shell, with salt and pepper
Scrambled eggs with butter and cream cooked super low, stirred constantly, until it's as creamy as polenta, with a strong cheese
Some kind of jerky, or tempeh bacon
Seaweed snack packs, nori sheets, and soft, salty dulse
Veggies with an awesome creamy dip or olive tapenade
Avocado with cacao powder and nibs = Best chocolate pudding

Hold on. I have some questions.
Plain chili flakes? As a snack? Is this a thing??
"Egg cooked just right in the shell" - Do you mean a boiled egg? If not, teach me.

My favorite dip for veggies/sandwich spread is called Streich. Do you have that there? You can buy lots of different flavors, the best being horseradish, (but runners up being gherkin and arugula) and it is made from a base of blended sunflower seeds.

I like fruit!

I like to eat it whole and I also like to sometimes eat the parts that some people don't eat. Also, I just learned that fruit stickers are food grade (including the adhesive).

I love citrus season. Really been enjoying TDE Mandarins this season.

I stand hard and fast by popcorn cakes. But yes with cheese or with peanut butter or with just a drizzle of good olive oil and salt!

Also whole baby cukes.

In quarantine we’ve been doing “peanut butter spoon.” It’s a spoonful of peanut butter!

Sure, just have some chili flakes. Not much different than enjoying a peppermint, really.

And yes, I meant a boiled egg... But cooked just right, with the yolk a step away from setting solid :ugeek:

Steve really did eat only fresh fruit for 7 days. That was a real Jack LaLanne-level feat of strength.
