Coffee
I've started roasting coffee as a hobby.
It's good to have hobbies.
I'm gonna roast a bunch this weekend.
Does anyone want me to send them a small amount in the US mail?
I'll try not to burn the bean.

It takes great! It's very smooth! I'm truly impressed, a very fine bean in a nice labeled jar. I would pay $ for it.

Re: Coffee
Ok! If I must
My interest was piqued when a company that sold green beans and roasting equipment moved next to my workplace. They actually were only there for like 9 months and moved away before I really dove in.
I'm roasting using two methods:
-Airpop Popcorn Popper! - Some, not all air poppers work great for this. It works pretty similarly to popping popcorn. You have a little less control and might not get a completely even roast on all beans with this method but it's pretty dang successful
-Ceramic handheld roaster

I love this beautiful thing. Pretty small batch, very manually.
I have sourced beans from:
https://www.sweetmarias.com (Bay Area, they have a ton of helpful videos for learning various home roasting methods. they also hook you up with a pretty solid batch of free beans when you buy any roaster from them even the $20 AirPopper)
and
https://burmancoffee.com
I bought a BUNCH of different kinds of beans in sizes from 1 lb. to 5 lbs. cause I just want to learn about the different beans (natural, washed, etc.) and how they perform.
Also, all my batches are pretty tiny (one batch is only like 2-4 days worth of coffee with my two processes).
I generally prefer light roasts so most everything I make I lean that direction but have accidentally made a darker roast here and there and while learning how it works have brought batches to 2nd crack (dark roast). Each bean they source will provide on the label or you can look at a roasting profile that shows you what the recommended roasting levels are or how the flavor profile changes at different roast levels.

From what I've read and experienced with my beans so far is that these methods work pretty well, but maybe take away some of the depth of flavor or complexity compared to more industrial roasters with more control. I think most of the beans have come out good and have good flavor. Some of them I could definitely imagine at coffee shops, but I'm not at Coava level yet.
Last weekend I roasted 4 different beans and made between 1 and 2ish pounds of each. Took like 6 hours. I shared beans with 9 folks, and it was fun to try to match the people and the different beans
The cool thing about green beans is that they last. They stay fresh for at least 12 months, as opposed to roasted beans which start to lose flavor and freshness in a couple weeks.
Hoping to learn more and possible get beans locally from:
https://buckmancoffee.com
They only sell in bigger sizes, but also have roasters you can roast on and classes you can take. They are used by some local roasters/shops
It's fun!

Re: Coffee
Everything roasted last Saturday that I shared with folks from this board and some other folks was roasted with air popper because I could do that outside and not take over the kitchen for a whole day. Ceramic roaster is over the stove (but I should get a cool little camp stove setup and do that outside too.
Re: Coffee
This is absolutely epic!! I love this so much. Very psyched for my beans!!!!!
Re: Coffee
Mr Uncle Shoes, may I request to join this club? I didn't want to take up a slot on the first time, but I feel like I gotta have those beans.
Re: Coffee
What a wide wide world! Nice work, sir.
I miss my popcorn popper. What a beautiful gadget. What other kitchen appliance is canary yellow?

A++++ WOULD READ AGAIN
One more Q: what region do you prefer beans from?
Now I want to try roasting! I have a stove-top popcorn maker (a la Cornballer) that maybe could give em a good roast. I am a fan of Eastern African beans with a light roast, and it would be fun to give it a shot at home.

My default is Ethiopian, but I really like to try any and all especially if it's a lil on the adventurous side. Give me them wild flavors.

Hi! We are happily drinking a warm and toasty mug of Steve’s home-roasted zub and I gotta say it’s fantastic. Thank you doctor Boat!
Re: Coffee
Guess what I am sipping, while you are still all snug in your beds??
BOATS BEANS
It's really delicious. A light, floral roast, very smooth. Goes down a treat. I am really enjoying it and also enjoying the hand-decorated artisanal package it came in. Thank you Stevie!
I declare this coffee to be: AWESOME

Re: Coffee
Today we’re having the last of our Steve brew without any milk to best appreciate its subtle flavors
Re: Coffee
I made Dalgona coffee today, because the internet is all excited about it and I like a stupid, easy project. All you do is put 1 or 2 tablespoons each of sugar, water, and instant coffee into a bowl and whip it essentially forever until it becomes a glossy, fluffy cloud.
Then you put some over ice and milk or whatever and it makes a nice little beverage. Is it that different from other iced coffee? NO! Was it fun and distracting? YES!
I don't often do full caffeine and I planned this in conjunction with some deep grout scrubbing. I scrubbed so hard my arms feel like noodles. Good drug for cleaning.

Re: Coffee
Carnelian Coffee is my favorite coffee shop and coffee beans in Portland and maybe the world.
They are the opposite of the boring multi million dollar marble fascinated ampersand named new money coffee shops that pop up all the time in Portland these days.
I bought 3 bags during this 'tine.
Bless them.

Re: Coffee
Bless YOU, uncleboatshoes. Unfortunately both Sasha and I are off the bean, otherwise I'd be sampling some of yours! I do treat myself to a fancy decaf latte or mocha once in a while, but I'm caffeine-free for 2 weeks now, because I think it contributes to my migraines. I miss it so much.
Re: Coffee
I go back and forth with caffeine because it definitely aggravates my headaches and migraines, but it also makes me feel AMAZING AND POWERFUL.
After a month of caffeine I'm now off the sauce, and sad

Re: Coffee
Before I quit caffeine, used to love so many caffeinated teas, including lapsing souchong. But cause I'm 50% British, I also appreciated a PG Tips or Tetley's or whatever.
Now I'm on nettle tea (has that earthiness but no caffeine), Throat Coat, Rosehip, Lemon & Ginger, etc. And decaf coffee from Carnelian as a treat.
New Century Tea Gallery in Seattle has AMAZING teas and you can do tastings, I highly recommend it if you're ever in the area after Quar.

Re: Coffee
god, i love a smokey tea
Re: Coffee
I also love a classic breakfast tea, bergamot-y grey tea. Lately I've been drinking a lot of decaffeinated english breakfast, just to have the treat feeling of sweet milky tea without the adrenal system blast.
