Silent Radio

Post by joni »

Claire and I are scrolling messages to our neighbors via a little TV we put in our window. I want to replace it with a classic "silent radio" LED scrolling message sign. Right now our message is just "MEDICARE FOR ALL" and a Google Voice number neighbors can text to submit messages. Any other ideas?

A guy on eBay in Portland has a sign that is the exact width of our window, but he wants $65 + $20 shipping. I might do it.

Re: photos - totally.

I don't know about your neighborhoods, but people are pretty constantly walking around here and at least one game (spot the teddy bear in the window - for kids) has started via Nextdoor. I think people are putting rainbows in windows too? Anyway, the idea is to make a community message board meets Jenny Holzer experience. Short poems, jokes, info (free lemons at 63 & Elgin St, etc.), and whatever else happens.

We negotiated via eBay's Make an Offer and I got it down to $74.74 total.

Mike, where can I buy these call options? I am potentially in the market for some more onions in mid or late May. Would also be interested in selling you a put.

I've always thought that Silent Discos that happen at festivals or wherever look pretty funny and maybe like it's been a prank that was never revealed

Yet, I love to wear headphones and will sometimes dance with them on.
I'm a hypocrite.

There's a vivid passage in the sci-fi story "Diamond Age" (1995) by Neil Stephenson where he narrates a silent disco in the future. Everyone is wearing a special pin that flashes and changes colors, live, with the music. I've always assumed that will happen eventually.

Update on our silent radio! After trying multiple scrolling messages (an Ursula K. Le Guin quote, a Groucho Marx joke, a joke about not drinking Lysol) we have struck gold with the following message:

WE HAVE A GREAT COOKIE RECIPE
TEXT <PHONE NUMBER>

We’ve received two (!!) texts from excited neighbors and have sent them both Tim’s peanut butter cookies from Recipes Only thread. One responded right away saying they’ll make the cookies this week and let us know how it goes. We’re on cloud nine!!!

The Groucho Marx joke (“time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana”) led to an extremely awkward interaction with an ESL neighbor who thought the sign meant we were selling fruit. They were like “you sell banana?” and I had to be like “no, it’s a joke” and crawl back into our house in full-body shame & horror
