Quarantine Injuries

Post by yourfriendclaire »

- Cut my middle finger pretty badly trying to slice a hard old key lime with a bread knife (I know) while making margaritas

- A small hard cactus spine pierced the flesh of my ring finger while I was weeding without gloves (I know) and wedged in so deeply I can’t tweezer it out. Now it is largely anodyne except when I bend my finger in certain specific ways—then it hits a nerve somewhere in there and my entire hand hurts wildly for 5 seconds

!!!!

I haven’t had an injury yet (knock on wood) but my hips are getting so bad that if I skip even one day of my physical therapy exercises I wake up in the night with pain so bad I can’t sleep, and because of quar I haven’t been able to go to PT appointments in months and I am sick of all my exercises and don’t even know if I’m doing things right. You’re supposed to get check-ins on this stuff. But I gotta just soldier on with my weird butt strengtheners

Not an injury but feels like quar-exacerbated physical issue which is maybe relatable.

My truly insane hair situation probably should count as an injury (to public taste and decency)

The cactus spine sounds VERY stressful!!

I'm fine but Chris's butt hurts real bad from the dumb stool he's been sitting on 8 hours a day. It got so bad he had a telemedicine appointment about it, but there's not much they can do about sore butts from afar. So now he's rotating between couch, precariously arranged standing-desk situation and my office zone, and stretching every ninety minutes.

This is prime time for desk injuries, sore butts & bad backs!

The cactus spine is okay. I look forward to the day three months from now when my body finally repels it as some weird pus-filed sore

When I sit for meditation hour my legs fall asleep and just let it happen.

Also pretty soon I'll be checking my blood sugar and ketones on the regular.

Will be fun to monitor new data!

What about Quarantine Healings? I feel about 200% better everyday because I am not allowed to play basketball anymore. I am a bit obsessive about playing basketball and would do so often and at an intensity detrimental to my hips, to an extent that regularly affected my walking and ability to stand upright for any prolonged amount of time.

Healing, sort of? I've lost 10 pounds because I'm eating so healthily and riding my bike every day. But I think most of that was muscle because I was also going to the gym 3x a week before this and eating lots of protein. I just got skinnier.

I cut the surface of my fingers twice with scissors from doing my own haircut. Big square cuts in the top surface flesh of my hands; I had to really stay on top of the wounds to make sure they didn't get infected.

Oh man, Pain! I am truly sorry to hear about it. Get well soon!

My finger right index blew up like a sausage and a doctor prescribed me some 'roids over zoom for it. I now have this witchy hard ball on the side of my knuckle that hurts when I chop things and also apparently arthritis.

I have done something like 20 minutes of yoga every day religiously for the past 2 months. It feels like very minor exercise but now I crave/look forward to it every day. I really feel like it helps my body be O.K. and helps me just be a better posture person an breath person in general. I even have vague arm and shoulder muscles, which is novel! I recommend it for you sore butt/back people!

I especially like that she has a calendar you can follow every month so you don't spent an hour in a click vortex every single day.

Yeah. Her website has a calendar each month and there is a link to a youtube playlist. Then just do today's or yesterday's or tomorrow's... One that looks reasonable for now.

Made popcorn, ate popcorn, had leftovers (made too much popcorn), ate the dregs of popcorn the next day.

Forgot about popcorn.

Tooth felt weird yesterday. Tooth felt very bad today. Went to dentist, thought I had a big problem. Turns out tons of large pieces of popcorn lodged in between my tooth and gum on both sides. Dentist and hygienist both said “WOW” multiple times.

Got mildly infected. On antibiotics. Feels better.

No more popcorn.

You mean like how in England cotton candy is called “candy floss” and in Australia it’s called “fairy floss?”

I vigorously did a Yoga With Adriene after a long lapse of couch-sitting and terrible posture and twigged something in my lower back

I burned my fingertips and arm on a very hot oven rack while removing Ritchey's famous Roasted Potatoes from the oven (miss you Ritchey!!)

I SMASHED the soft meaty middle part of my hand trying to un-wedge the awkwardly long metal rod of a photography seamless background from its perch in the garage.

This was a while ago but I handled too much bleach with my bare hands and burned my fingerprints off entirely. It was so amazing. Not a burn so much as a weakening of the skin? My fingertips were *seeping* blood, and then hardened to a smooth shell. It took a month for the TouchID on my computer to work again.

I read this a couple of hours ago and I can't get this 80's horror movie shot of blood *seeping* from your fingertips out of my mind. Truly gruesome.

p.s. stop hurting yourself please.

These injuries! Eeeee. I have the good fortune of some quarantine healing... I've had a foot neuroma for a few years that can make dog walking very painful, but with all of the quarantine yoga it seems to be at bay and I can walk all day. Another vote for yoga.

I recently got a firm, all latex mattress as fallout from a friend's divorce and it forces me to sleep on my back, which is great for the back. My back never hurt more than when I bought an internet mattress... after a few weeks I got up in the middle of the night, moved to the living room floor and slept there on a tatami mat for the next month and felt like a million bucks.

My fridge tho just got injured...

marijke yes to firm mattresses! after being burdened by a overly squishy foam internet mattress for 3 years I left it behind in a cross-country move and went to the old-fashioned mattress store and bought the firmest, springiest mattress I could tolerate. one year later I'm so pleased with it (as is my back).

took a slow motion tumble from my bike today resulting from a problem with the chain I was on the way to the repair shop to have fixed. a little scraped up but could be worse! as a very clumsy person I generally avoid biking, and thus I absolute consider this a quarantine injury that resulted from a quarantine-induced activity on a quarantine loaner bike.

So this is dumb. I got a little bit of arthritis in a finger this summer. Then this month, I started having a lot of pain in my hips whenever I did a long walk or hike and was really like, shit, here it comes. But after a little research I realized my hips weren't actually hurting inside the joint but outside in some soft tissue. Turns out I did too much yoga at home all summer. HA!

It is good to know though! I am a little hypermobile and not strong. I was just blasting away at lizards and pigeons or whatever and letting my weight fall into my hip joints. I have done more reading on the subject and will be more careful about just cruising into hip and shoulder stretches because it "feels good." I also learned that to do a proper pushup you need to be able to lift like 60% of your body weight. That might seem obvious but I hadn't thought about it. That means if you aren't able to lift that much and you are plowing through a bunch of chaturanga up-dogs in a practice, it is likely you are not doing it right and might be hurting yourself. Knowledge! I have been getting stronger I think but evidently not strong enough.

I tried it a few times, somewhat ill-advisedly, for a Mystery Rash. I didn't find it helpful in the rash department, but it was extremely relaxing and pretty interesting. I did group acupuncture where they just set you up in a La-Z-Boy in a dim room with some other folks and you just vibe out for an hour until they come take the needles out.

Oof! Slapstick!

I was feeling extremely stressed out this weekend about launching a new YACHT project and completely lost awareness of my body. Fell on my ass hiking, nearly walked into a tree, rammed my knee sideways into a glass coffee table, and somehow injured my shoulder doing yoga, all in one day.

You'll have to take up fencing to reset your proprioception!

I always figure that would be useful as some kind of therapy, because you have to be hyper-aware of some tiny little point in space.

I just dropped a knife point-down onto my foot! It's not a large cut, but I really didn't *love* the experience.

I was really excited to do stuff today too... first real day off in 2 weeks and finally feeling recovered from my vacc. Instead I have my foot up on pillows like a real queen (idiot).

The knife point in foot is one of those nightmare fantasies that I always think *almost* happened, but I am also secretly confident will *never* happen. What's the reality like?

It's ok/gonna heal up just fine. Tender and stupid, but healing.

It happened in slow motion! I felt the knife slip out of my hand as it was almost over the sink, but as I looked down I saw it falling slowly through the air pointed directly at my foot. I might have shouted? There are so many veins on the top of the foot and it immediately starting bleeding in a gross way. I worried about needing a stitch or two but it actually stopped bleeding after a bit and some steady pressure.

It was both very dramatic and, in the end, nbd!
I tend to be lost in thought when left to my own devices... sometimes I lose the plot a bit or drop a knife in the wrong spot.
