"Spooky Season"
When did the term "spooky season" emerge? I feel like I'd never heard it before in my life, and now it's the only way we're describing October?
Anyway, spooky thread:
- H'ween costumes—you dressing up this year to sit in your house?
- Scary movie tips—I want to watch some (non-rapey, non-gory) scares this year!

Re: "Spooky Season"
It must have been in the last few years, right? And it must be the internet?
I'm not dressing up this year... it would probably feel great, but it sounds hard/I don't have much extra energy. A costume I've been meaning to do for years is the Childlike Empress from The Neverending Story! She's so sad... it would be appropriate for 2020.
I also want scary movie tips!

Things are getting spooky over here.

We're going to hand paint some skeleton suits (I have a lot of leftover "discharge paste" from scarf making years ago), put some Clara Rockmore on the record player and sit on the porch with candles and beverages. I thought about setting up the projector in the yard for a movie, weather depending, but I'm not into scary movies!

I've never heard "Spooky Season" before!
I do love dressing up though.
My costumes for the last decade or so:
2010 - Bono
2011 - ???
2012 - Sexy Banksy
2013 - Sexy Mark Zuckerberg
2014 - "Raver"
2015 - Sexy Scully
2016 - Sexy Shrek
2017 - Sexy Baby
2018 - Sexy Shrimp
2019 - Sexy Riker
Might just sit around the house naked with the Shrek mask on this year

Wow Sexy Shrimp, I missed that one!
Re: "Spooky Season"
Your costume history is really incredible. Most of those years I've had the pleasure of running into you at a party and being dazzled by the splendor of a Mahan in fishnets and whatever else. Sexy baby is absolutely the most upsetting!!!

I wanna see Sexy Freddy!
Re: "Spooky Season"
I remember sexy Freddy (I think)! I am rarely sexy and remember no costumes.
Re: "Spooky Season"
I'm pretty sure "Spooky Season" is an AAVE phrase, like most pop culture!
My blessed friends. I spend many hours watching scary movies year round and I feel an actual duty to sharesome good, non-disturbing-in-a-bad-way recs.
What do We think about the Ghoulies franchise? The monsters are gross but also super cute, you might like it. I would start with GHOULIES II, which takes place in a carnival!

PHANTASM is a superb October classic. It has a mysterious Tall Man, a suspicious mortuary, trees blowing in the wind, and a leather jacket guy and his kid brother. I think it is visually beautiful.

Re: "Spooky Season"
Thank you Bocko!
Phantasm is definitely on my list.
I've missed most of the big 'Ween scaries: in the year of our lord 2020, I've still never seen The Exorcist, Omen, Poltergeist, or Halloween. Except we watched Poltergeist last night and I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't a scary movie (to me) as much as a movie ABOUT something scary?
Any Freddy-heads on the board? The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise remains my favorite horror pleasure.

Re: "Spooky Season"
It took me years to watch The Exorcist and when I finally did I was totally underwhelmed and not scared, not sure why? Maybe cause I find priests ridiculous?
I've never watched Freddy cause one time as a kid (11 or so?) I peeped at one and I was VERY scared.

Re: "Spooky Season"
I think my friends might like THE BOY (2016)!
It is a good old haunted doll movie about a child's nursemaid who is hired to live full-time in a mansion and look after... a porcelain doll who is treated as a live child by the family.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGbB9UQ6r1g
Spooky, not too visceral or real, scary but not aggressively so,
THE CONJURING (2013)!
This is a good old haunted house movie (a la Amityville Horror, the grande dame of the found footage genre), updated with great actors and a contemporary style of tension. If you like Vera Farmiga's sophisticated drama chops, you will be most rewarded. Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" is in the soundtrack, and I have been thinking about Donovan today.

(For those with stronger stomachs and deviant curiosities...)
TOURIST TRAP (1979)
This movie is super special IMO. The story is a horror classic... a car full of coeds gets lost in the boonies on their way to spring break. Themes include: old-timey tourist traps, mannequins, stunt casting (Chuck Connors, former 50's-cowboy-star-turned-yesterday's-paper, delivers a truly beautiful and transcendent performance), dolls that move of their own volition, groups of nervous people splitting up when they shouldn't (that's the TCSM influence), and telekenesis. (alexshred420 please please you and Sash have to watch this and report back.)

Re: "Spooky Season"
I want to watch Phantasm tonight! It looks very good.
The Conjuring was way scarier than it really had any right to be, tbh. I thought it was going to be cheesy but I was legit freaked out during some scenes.

Now this is more what I'd expect from a spammer. I like that the last line made a call back.
