I am re watching my hilarious boyfriend's show Better Call Saul, in anticipation of S4. Actually we're not dating now (it's complicated).

I don't know who I dearly adore more, Kim Wexler or Howard Hamlin. They're both such great people. Kim's got her wild side, but have you seen her ponytail? Who cares what she does, she's an angel.

PS I want to practice falconry with Kestrels when I'm old

I love Better Call Saul because it’s everything you loved about Breaking Bad (Bob Odenkirk) and none of the stuff you didn’t (Aaron Paul). I love how it nails the weird New Mexico fancy lawyer aesthetic universe of gunmetal grey women’s pantsuits, glass bricks, and expensive liquors in funky hand-blown martini glasses. Kim’s ponytail! It’s cool how it curls and bounces at the very end when it really seems like her hair would be straight. I like her brisk tragic way. What a good show! Anyway happy 4/20 everyone

** Better Call Saul spoiler alert **

I was watching Better Call Saul until Kim's absolutely terrifying car accident in season 3. after that I was so concerned about her fate I couldn't bear to continue watching knowing she is no longer in Saul's orbit by Breaking Bad times, and thus I could not be assured of her ultimate well-being. should I revisit?

The best part of the Sopranos is how the horse has a pet goat of its own. I love it when Carmella first sees the goat and Tony tells her it’s the horse’s friend.

we are watching Medical Police, which is extremely silly and also weirdly prescient? It came out in January but the whole thing is about a global epidemic that the CDC can't fight because it is critically underfunded*, and a pair of surgeons who become like international super cops (hence the name) and try to solve the medical mystery

It is I guess a spin off of the show Children's Hospital which I think I watched part of but forgot almost everything about except for Rob Corddry in clown make up (who is also in this)

I wouldn't say it's good necessarily but it feels weirdly cathartic to watch a show that is like, making light of a situation that we didn't even know we would be in when it was being made

* Spoiler alert:
It turns out that the CDC is behind the outbreak because they want to create a disaster they can solve in order to justify their own existence and get more funding

I loved Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) (on *etflix), Miyazaki Hayao's first feature film. It's kind of a 50's Euro gangster action film, via manga and animation. Really fun stuff.

I also really liked The Girl With All The Gifts (2016). Zombie story from the POV of a lovely 10yo child who is also a zombie. It's scary but not tragic and the ending is very pro-kid.

@RCH, we sometimes watch the programming on NHK World, which is an English-language, Japanese-produced TV network. They have an Apple TV channel with so many mind-bogglingly soothing shows, like travel documentaries about biking Japan's mountain highlands (where a single guy and a cameraman just roll through tiny villages and spontaneously interview people they pass along the way) or really detailed profiles of specific heritage crafts and the prefectures of Japan that specialize in those crafts. They just ran an episodic Miyazaki Hayao documentary following him for TEN YEARS! It's really interesting to see how he works! It goes through the whole process of coming up with Ponyo and making storyboards, his weird uptight home life and his relationship to his son, who he is spectacularly mean to throughout the whole documentary. You can watch it on NHK World's website!

We just watched that Bruce Haack documentary too! Jona just got into him. I like the first (British) season of Black Mirror because it truly is grim and bleak but the more recent American seasons are a little one-note and corny for my taste. In our household/band we refer to Black Mirror as “Mum’s in ya mobile” because the essential premise is always “what if Mum was in your mobile??” (Telephone)

The episode of Mr Rogers with Bruce Haack and Esther Nelson is worth its own watch. Mr R is so earnestly deeply excited. Watch him dance and jump! He also made electronic music you know! All of the cool tunes in the background of like going to the crayon factory are made by Mr R! He is a wonder and a delight.

I watched Yi Yi and it is great. Evan.V.N.S.J. is right. It is three hours long and when it ends you kinda don't want it to. Nigel Andrews said, "to describe it as a three-hour Taiwanese family drama is like calling Citizen Kane a film about a newspaper." Which seems to say more in one line than I certainly can.

We signed up for a free YouTube TV trial and it is equal parts horrifying and OK.

Live TV, or cable as its more commonly known, is totally batshit bonkers right now. Every commercial is about coronavirus and legally has to say either "now more than ever" or "uncertain times" at some point. That is obviously very stressful and bad. But there are also channels you can add to your free trial, including TCM, Sundance, and TBS. But the quality of these streams is really bad, and it's a pretty weird time navigating through the junk.

The good is there are gems in there. I only thought of trying it because TBS decided to air the scrapped show The Dress Up Gang, which you may remember from the Cute House clip I shared earlier in this window. The show is pretty great.

Tonight we watched Girlfriends (1978) and it was so good! yourfriendclaire will elaborate.

JK Girlfriends is great!

It’s an independent 70s movie about two female roommates in New York, and what happens when one decides to move out and get married and become a normie and the other one sticks it out to try and become an art photographer. It’s shot like a documentary and feels extremely ahead of its time in that it’s about a female friendship and the men in their lives (played by young Christopher Guest and young Bob Balaban!!) are totally incidental to the central love story. It’s really funny and well-observed and extremely modern; Girls owes a lot to it for sure. Jona and I were tripping out about how easily the main characters could be transplanted to present-day Los Angeles/New York and not miss a beat. At one point the main character gets mad and yells “Fart!” as an expletive. Loved it!

joni I am working hard to wrap my mind around how something can be equal parts HORRIFYING and OK. It is unprecedented; I have nothing to compare it to. How does that feel??

I am LOVING the hyperlinks! All the tabs!

Also hearing Americans talk about tv is mind boggling. I feel like after living away for over a decade, tv and public education/charter schools are the two things that evolved in a way that I just DON'T UNDERSTAND. WHAT IS EVEN GOING ON??!?
Living with Lucky Luc for a couple of months was like gazing into the future:
"Hey tv, play Star Trek: The Next Generation."
"On what platform, master?"
"Ugh, just choose for yourself for once in your damn life. I'm gonna make a mezcal cocktail."
"Computing. Here is Star Trek: The Next Generation on Netflix, my love."

Then I talk to the stick? Nada.

Girlfriends sounds wonderful!!

Also reminds me that awhile ago we watched this French movie whose American title was CHICKS. I can't remember the French title. Woman director, mostly improvised dialogue. And the only way I can describe it is it's like a more realistic, much grosser/more disturbing "Girls" with less sympathetic characters, and like it was directed by Robert Altman if Altman were interested in the lives of 20 year old women. It RULED. We laughed so much. Those awful mean pretty Paris girls, peeing in the street and screaming at their neighbors to fuck off! But again it's just a gaggle of girls and a couple male hangers-on that they mostly make fun of, and there's something satisfying about it.

Might I also recommend the amazing gem of a television show called DERRY GIRLS? It is Irish, set in shitty suburban Ireland during The Troubles. Gang of working class high school girls at Catholic school. Learning about life, love, and sectarian religious conflict together while not really paying attention and mostly just scheming to find boys to French. Soundtrack is all Cranberries and other 90s Irish-forward hits. The girls are amazing geniuses. I can't say enough good things about this show. I forget how/where we watched it but it was such a true pleasure, every episode a jewel. There are two seasons I think.

Yeah! She directed a bunch of Thirtysomething episodes too. Has anyone watched that show ever? I vaguely remember my parents watching it, but it was one of the things that they didn’t think I should watch as illustrated by closing the pane glass door to our “family room.” Sometimes I’d sneak up to it and peek through while really crouched on the floor.

Girl Friends, Derry Girls, and the French one sound great.

I'm having a mini Anton Yelchin fest focusing on his earlier roles. Fierce People (2007) is a special one, with Diane Lane as his mom, Kristen Stewart as his girl, Donald Sutherland as a spoiled rich man, and Chris Evans as his rich grandson. It has a lot of unexamined anthropological ugliness as well, but that is not the good part.

Next is Charlie Barlett (2008) followed by Middle of Nowhere (2008) and Jack (2004), all available on tubi.

Then I will watch the 2019 documentary about him, Love, Antosha!!!!
