Also did anyone else love to buy those Grammy nominee compilations on cassette in the 90s?! I remember being very attached to the 1995 compilation: Mariah Carey's "Hero," Boyz II Men, Joan Osborne's "What if God Was One Of Us?"

How could I have forgotten Empire Records? And Trainspotting and Romeo + Juliet.

I remember snagging the free compilations at the Tower Records cash register.

My huge soundtracks:
Batman (Danny Elfman score, NOT the cool Prince one—I didn’t understand that they were two diff albums until people at school mocked me for having the wrong one. I still loved it)

Early high school was very much about the Robin Hood soundtrack w the Bryan Adams ballad

Gross Pointe Blank was huge for me, I believe that is where I first heard Under Pressure

Singles and Reality Bites of course, major

Dudes SAY ANYTHING

Pulp Fiction, the first time in my life I heard any “cool” “vintage” music, thank you hipster tastemaker sir

Natural Born Killers was huge, “sweet Jane” was my high school boyfriend’s and my song and he requested it at prom and the DJ said “this is for Mallory from Mickey,” how truly lame and creepy is that?? I loved it

The Desperado soundtrack w the dire straits and the link Wray was major sex/romance vibes with my intense post high school boyfriend who welded footrests into his fuckin motorcycle just for me to ride behind him and then etched my name into them with some sort of blowtorch tool to mark me as his forever passenger (he was a Cancer) our song was “so far away” off this soundtrack

I do NOT remember the clueless soundtrack but I bet it’s great

as an added bonus, the music video for this is TRULY insane and if you haven't seen it since the 90's please do yourself a favor and take this journey

Just FYI there's some hot Peps on my Gen-X playlist.
I sent my playlist to a fellow member of Gen-X but one who is on the older end of the spectrum, whereas I am on the younger end. He first commented on how alienated he felt by my "mid 90s sweet spot" of Boyz II Men and "More Than Words" etc. Then he noted he was disturbed by how much Peps was on there, and specifically he said: "I have always thought of them as one of the worst bands of all time. Truly just garbage music. But you people love them." I felt proud in this moment. YOU DON'T GET IT, OLD MAN

I was JUST thinking about how "cute" the band name Red Hot Chili Peppers is. Think of them having a beer after practice and shooting names back and forth and then being like, "YEAH, AWESOME! RCHP is soooo cool!!! We NAILED it! I love you, guys!"

And I literally cannot physically stop myself from contributing to the soundtracks of my life convo:
10 year old me hanukkah presents were - The Nightmare Before Christmas cd and a discman, which meant a lot of valuable time in bed memorising ALL of the songs and lots of Danny Elfman exposure.
Pulp Fiction- HUGE
Natural Born Killers - I thought I was the baddest and coolest kid in the history of middle schools everywhere. That Cohen song though. This album both excited and terrified me.
The Spice Girls Movie - was fun for irony and then just became this thing I listened to.
HELLO, Forrest Gump!
Later:
Oh brother where art thou
The Royal Tennenbaums
This 1981 French porno called Diva which I have literally NEVER EVEN SEEN - A regular at the record/book store I worked at in Hollywood 100 years ago walked up the the counter and bought that record and then handed it to me. And was just like, "I assume you don't own this, every time I see it I want to buy it because I love it so much. Here, it's for you." It's a mix of arias and these instrumental original minimalist pieces that kind of sound like an Eric Satie song run through a 1981-machine.
Soundtracks are just the best, man. It is my favorite section of a record store.

Anyone on this board who is from the state of Colorado needs to wise up and get obsessed with this album:

This is embarrassing but since you're all my good friends:

joni and I went hard on some early-career Red Hot Chili Peppers last night. For some reason it blew my mind that the Peps were releasing albums in the mid-'80s. I think of them as such a '90s band. This despite the fact that I have READ and LOVED Anthony Kiedis' autobiography "Scar Tissue" (alt title: "Blow Jobs I Have Had"). I think I was feeling particularly housebound and crazy and I got into a zone hippie-dancing on the rug to tracks such as "Behind The Sun," which is about a talking dolphin:

https://youtu.be/zffHLA_KM5M

Anyway felt good

Later I purchased an ill-advised Peps t-shirt on eBay

Man, Muzak keeps coming up for me recently.

In Hard Times, the book about the Great Depression I recently recommended in the "What Are You Reading?" thread, there's an oral history from the CEO of Muzak—did you know it was that old? Muzak has existed since before radio. The founder of Muzak invented a way to transmit music over electric lines in the '20s—that's the original tech. It was during the Depression that the company started to focus on worker productivity and moved away from transmitting popular music to recording custom-made music in 15-minute blocks that ramp up in speed and alternate with 15-minute blocks of silence to alleviate burnout. Full-on mind control stuff. The CEO quotes a bank teller who worked in the small loans department of a bank during the Depression, she says something like "the Muzak makes this place less gruesome."

And then I was leafing through a virtual copy of Mondo 2000 the other day (as you do) and read a Psychic TV-era interview with Genesis P-Orridge, where they talk about how industrial "Musick" is the anti-Muzak, in that it uses the sounds of the industrial world to reveal itself, rather than concealing or cushioning the listener from those sounds.

That interview (plus some relevant segments pilfered from internal Muzak Corporation publications) is here, if anyone's curious:

Wow! So maybe in comedies near the 20's, when they used funny "boop-boodaloop" type music while someone was working too fast and making a mess of it, it was a lampoon of factory music? Did Ford blast ragtime at his men twice a shift? I'm starting to get some real Mr. Show ideas from too little knowledge.

Imagine if Ford's rival wanted to save money on a sound system, so he had some trained pigs up on a balcony for horn sounds, hens for the melodic line, and a mule keeping time.

I love that Sab!

Discovering that early Oz Sabbath rules has been a delight of my adult life. Heavy like dredge in a shipping channel. A young English freak who for some reason is a Soul singer. Heavy metal for me to slowly spin around to like a goth flower child.

Swooping in here with a vigorous recommendation for the many mixes produced by Slow Grind Fever, a DJ party in Melbourne that focuses on early rock n' roll, soul, crooner jazz, blues, oddities, and general swinging, spooky, sweet tunes from the first half of the 20th century. We're just playing these on repeat.

I've been listening to so much Benoît Pioulard (his real name is like "Thomas Smith" or something, I guess you need a fake fancy French name to be successful in ambient) but particularly this one, which has a very cool cover of Aphex Twin's "Stone In Focus": https://pioulard.bandcamp.com/album/radial
