This is "off topic," but does anyone else think about how to periodize period movies? Like the way that all movies set in the 40's but made in the 90's look different from movies set in the 40's but made in the 2020s etc

Re: Guess The Movie
I do think about that sometimes, and just last night I was watching the new Emma (eh) and noticed that the period-specific no makeup look actually included a cheek highlight that is very of the moment. You glow, girl.
Re: Guess The Movie
You mean, like appreciating the details of how a contemporary film chooses to represent a period piece? This is a good topic. Is there a name for this exact field of study?Evan.V.N.S.J. wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 2:22 pm

Re: Guess The Movie
There's also generational fascinations with certain decades, expressed in fashion & music. The 90s loved the 70s (that 70s Show, platform shoes, Dee-Lite), the 70s loved the 40s (Happy Days), and the 2010s LOVED the 90s. In vintage clothing world there's really specific interest in this, like you can search on eBay for "90s does 70s" to find a specific subset of vintage fashion.
Re: Guess The Movie
All you need to do is look at the Robert Redford Great Gatsby for a millisecond to be like, WHOA that is from the 70's.

Yeah! Or The Sting!
Re: Guess The Movie
It’s not an education, it IS “fake” lol
Re: Guess The Movie
Maybe Robert Redford just insisted on looking "cool"
Re: Guess The Movie
I LOVE THAT IT IS FAKE!!!!
What could it be?? I have no guess.
Yes I love the period-period concept! Would watch a doc exploring how e.g WWII movies have looked through the ages. Or cavemen!!! “That’s such a 70s caveman”

A Serious Man?
Re: Guess The Movie
Omg also a great guess!!!!
Re: Guess The Movie
I think a Single Man is 40s not 60s, right? Do I remember it correctly?
Re: Guess The Movie
A Serious Man is correct! Not to be confused with a Single Man.

Is this too hard? I used to walk by this building every day so it always weirds me out to see it in Movies.

Hint: Taipei!

I am pretty sure I haven't seen this movie! At any rate, I have no guess.

Re: Guess The Movie
yes but that's not the name of the movie
OK I will give in to this one but only if I get to do another easier one in its place.yourfriendclaire wrote: ↑Mon Apr 27, 2020 11:56 am I am woefully under-educated in Taiwanese cinema! Educate us!
The movie is Yi Yi directed by Edward Yang - There's a good criterion DVD of it and I actually discovered while finding that screen shot that someone uploaded the whole thing to YouTube (poor quality, but does have English subtitles if you turn them on)
It's a VERY GOOD movie. But despite my aversion to smart movies it is very much a smart movie. If you are interested in 3 hours in the life of a mildly dysfunctional Taiwanese family that climaxes in an (off-screen) act of violence that has very little to do with anything going on for the rest of the movie, this is the one for you. I'm underselling it - it might be my favorite movie of all time.
I guess if I had to do analogies it's kind of like if Ozu directed Magnolia. Maybe with a dash of Altman. Basically everything I like, in one movie.

OK so here's my next choice. I hope it is easier. I promise it is not as obscure as the last one. Please ignore the dumb watermark in the corner. The theme that unites these two, is "Cars"
Re: Guess The Movie
Man, I was going to watch Yi Yi a few days ago and the link a friend emailed to me would not ever finish downloading! I coulda been a contender!
Re: Guess The Movie
Yi Yi sounds good as hell. I love to see a dysfunctional family drama that implies violence [anyone here see the smoldering KRISHA (2015)?]

I once tried to watch the Fast and the Furious but cars driving fast/aggressively is a huge trigger for me as a daily cyclist so I couldn't.

I love Yi Yi!
I saw it in 2000 or 2001. I should've known. Evan's description of that movie is great.

Re: Guess The Movie
I just went to guess "Interstellar" but when I googled it to see what year it was I realized I was thinking of the wrong title (I was thinking of Innerspace, 1987) and now I am loling at the idea of this image being in Interstellar
Re: Guess The Movie
I LOVED Innerspace as a kid and have wanted to re-watch it for a while now. TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT!
Re: Guess The Movie
I have never seen it! Report back!
