I have been thinking about Jadzia Dax this morning, maybe in the aftermath of watching Lost Highway again last night. Lynch is fixated on women who believe for some reason or another that their value added to the world is their sexuality. Especially women who are trapped by men in relationships of sexual commodity.
Anyhoo, it got me thinking about Jadzia and how she represents the opposite. How a beautiful woman can be admired sexually by the people around her with literally zero social residue of how she should feel about that admiration. She has been trained her entire life to prepare for being multiple individuals who each have memories and full rich lives and personalities. Her body is the one she grew up with, but it is also a host to this other life and these other memories. She is free/able to appreciate her own body as a thing that brings her pleasure. Even though people find her beautiful, she clearly feels no social pressure to share it and yet does so eagerly and shamelessly when so inclined. It is also a thing that is strong and capable of jungle warfare or Klingon martial arts. None of her self respect or self love is intrinsically tied to her sexuality or her beauty but that doesn't mean that she doesn't find pleasure or joy in her own damn sexy self.

I miss DS9. The Voyager characters just aren't doing it for me the same way. Though I love Janeway and the Dr is quickly growing on me.

Yeah, Molly! Jadzia contains multitudes. I love how mischievous she is too. She takes pleasure in the adventure of life, because it just keeps on giving.

We just recently re-watched the iconic episode where she has to work on the station with the widow of one of her former hosts—they use the Trill "taboo" of trans-host romantic relations as an allegory for homophobia, and the episode featured one of the first lesbian kisses on television. I'm sure dissertations have been written...

While i think that Lore is a very good name for Data’s brother, I wonder if Ditto would have been better

Look at that boss swing!
That episode is so good. It is interesting that there is sort of teaser to it in TNG when Beverly Crusher falls in love with a mysterious stranger with a secret, who turns out to be our (the audience's) first encounter with the Trill species. He dies and his trill is moved into a female host who still loves Crusher. Crusher tries to have feelings for her but can't muster them. Did those two woman not share a kiss?
My interpretation of that episode was not so much homophobic (though TNG doesn't do itself a lot of favors in that regard -- having the two most androgynous characters, Data and Tasha, do sex with each other?? gross.) but more that when you love a person you cannot (easily) separate their body from that love; you love their whole personhood. It also becomes clear in DS9 that not every Dax is created equal.

What are your thoughts on Ezri Dax?

Like Worf, I had a hard time coming to love her.

I think killing Jadzia was a bad call. Ezri annoyed me for a while. I sort of forgave her for being a weiner because she never had any intention of hosting a trill. Also her bizarre family brought some cool weird stuff to the table.

There’s some kinda boring Hollywood backstory to killing off Jadzia—like Terry Farrel wasn’t getting paid enough, or she wanted to do something else. I think the latter. Shooting that show was a bit of a burnout job. Really crazy hours, so much time in makeup. She left to be in the Ted Danson show “Becker,” I believe. Kinda pops the mystical Star Trek bubble to remember they’re just actors driving to the lot every morning at dawn to get their spots painted on ‘em.

Classic!

I read something about how she was supposed to be a recurring character—like she was going to leave with them on the ship, somehow, and join the cast.

Isn't it so gross to see Tom Paris out of uniform?

I can't stop thinking about this (double) episode. I realized that after a full week of teeth clenching dread, cable news and newscaster cadenced voices, this delightful sci-fi romp through 1990's Los Angeles guest starring Sarah Silverman and Tuvok in a dewrag was like a full-on seaside holiday for my psyche. Highly recommend Star Trek Voyager Season 3, Episodes 8&9.

It’s a great one. There’s something really funny about seeing that crew hang out on Venice Beach. You suddenly can imagine the cast as actors living in LA, going to auditions...it’s kind of like that classic DS9 episode where they go back to 1950s America and everyone’s out of makeup and Sisko’s a science fiction writer.

Tangential: wanna play a round of Star Trek Fuck/Marry/Kill?

I propose:

Chakotay
Tuvak
Odo

Re: TREK!

by m o l l y
Ooh, hard one. My very first thought was fuck Chakotay and marry Odo, but then...

Both Odo and Tuvak are so completely and admirably devoted to their partners. And in that episode where Chakotay and Janeway think they are going to have to make a new life for themselves with a curious monkey on that planet because they were bitten by bugs, Chakotay seems like he is going to be a truly lovely life partner.

I think in the end, I'd fuck Odo because he is a changeling and that seems cool and marry Chakotay? Tukak is great and all but I'd be so afraid of disappointing him all the time. Pity though, Tuvak is a total hunk. Sorry Tuvak; it's not you, it's me!

Solid. For me it’s Fuck Chakotay (I think we can all agree it’s canon that Chakotay brings the pound), marry Tuvak, kill Odo?? Tuvak is a devoted husband, and maybe death for Odo is simply a great return to the great ooze, or whatever that lake on his planet is called.

The nice thing about "marry" is that ostensibly, you also get to fuck.

Ok another trio:

Beverly Crusher, Katherine Janeway, Kira Nerys

I know, total toughy. There is no great way out of this one. I think I'd marry Crusher and F. Janeway? Though Janeway is a decidedly more fun and adventurous life partner. Marry Janeway and bone Crusher? Remember when she's all horny for that ghost that boned her grandma to death? Hot.

Yes another very viable option is to make sophisticated grown-up love to Crusher, Marry Janeway, and kill Kira, who was after all perfectly ready to die for the Bajoran resistance.

Okay here's another:

Doctor Bashir
Worf
First season Riker (no facial hair)

Similarly to Kira, I think if you could kill worf with honor he would gladly shuffle off to stovokor.

Then fuck Riker (schwing), and who doesnt want to marry a doctor

I only know TNG, but fuck Worf and kill Riker.

Sure, marry a doctor!

Oof. I do not want to marry any of them. Fuck Worf for sure. I don't remember if 1st season Riker is any less gross than regular Riker so I'll have to marry Bashir like these alexes.

Re: TREK!

by yourfriendclaire
I think you kill Riker (no facial hair) in hopes that he is reincarnated through some kind of inter-dimensional logic as Riker (with facial hair). Then you fuck Bashir because I think he's cute, and you marry Worf, who will Honor you until the end times (plus when you marry Worf you get to wear that insane red leather dress that Dax wears, with the gold headband).

Re: TREK!

Yeah I guess that was a pretty easy one. I mostly wanted to brag about seeing Gul Dukat in the pool. Apparently all the women on the show did not like that actor—in the (mediocre) DS9 documentary "All We Left Behind" it's pretty obvious that he gave Nana Visitor the creeps!
