Last night I dreamed I was part of a magical crew of time traveling warriors. We traveled back to Birmingham Alabama in the 60s and for awhile the dream was White Supremacy Nightmare dream (many of our members were black including our leader, who had an amazing name I can't remember) with people hassling us in diners and cops threatening to kill us. BUT THEN. Our leader was like "ok activate Plan A" and suddenly we transformed into our true selves (magical time traveling fantasy warriors, with crazy body armor and enchanted bows and arrows and such, some of us may have been elves) and rode a huge VIKING SHIP through downtown Birmingham while all the people who had been threatening us stood and gawped. We were like the harbingers of the fall of Valhalla or something, it was extremely epic and cool as hell. We brought the former racists on board to begin their new destinies bringing about the end of the world. They immediately joined in with us and also became magical warriors with enchanted bows, they were cleansed of false consciousness and became filled with the fierce joy of comradeship. Then we sailed this crazy ship into this obviously Skyrim-influenced landscape and went looking for this particular dragon we had to have a final confrontation with, in order to bring this world to an end and allow the new world to be born. It was so awesome.

Electronic devices (phones, computers, etc) never work in my dreams. The interface is always sort of dissolving and impossible to use. Kinda neat.

—VR/simulation technology world. Hard sensors, like small tacks, were shot into my skin at key points like shoulders, knees, feet and head. They hurt but there was no bleeding.
—Suiting up: there was a machine with a console and many armatures. When I stood on a pair of foot panels with a natural, relaxed posture, the machine sussed my measurements in relation to the sensors studded in my skin and printed a small receipt that I could exchange for special clothing.
—Once outfitted, I was armored. My opponent was flinging energy balls at me and I was able to block and deflect them with my hands.
—Human-carrying drones: to escape a level of the game, I climbed through elevator doors into a silver-lined room full of dials and buttons. The walls were soft and I was bouncing around them as the whole enterprise was carried elsewhere.

My coworkers and I are staying at my bosses' house, but instead of being a funky Barrio adobe in downtown Tucson, it's a rambling Edwardian brick mansion in the countryside with extensive grounds. Inside the house are cluttered, maze-like rooms with fussy Victorian bric-a-brac and ostrich plumes, dim gas lamps, and giant black cast-iron appliances. There are children here running around, and the whole thing has a "Battle of Britain" vibe, like we're all hunkered down away from London to avoid the Luftwaffe blitz. Strolling around the outside of the house at night in twos and threes, I notice a top-floor corner bedroom, which I loudly claim for myself, and run inside and up a complicated staircase. Once I find the room I light a terrifying gas heater that kind of pokes through the floor to the kitchen, peruse the deeply English-looking toiletries arranged by the washbasin (they almost certainly smell of violets), and flop down on the big frilly bed. Aaaaah. Sleep.
Moral of the story: Dream Luc looks out for one guy. Dream Luc.

Two dreams last night:
1) was dropped off at “the train station” by the hosts of my favorite celebrity fluff podcast. Realized upon getting there that I’d lost my suitcase, had no train ticket, and in fact was in the wrong city entirely. The train station became “Chicago O’Hare International Airport” although it looked like a cross between a Borg cube and Union station. I helplessly tried to find the “Delta ticketing counter” and a series of sinister associates ping-ponged me back and forth to incorrect locations until I was hysterical with stress and sobbing, and my flight left without me.
2) a student film starring myself and my first college boyfriend (who—in related waking news—recently pulled the legendary move of waiting 18 years + 8 weeks of quarantine after telling me it was unrealistic for me to ever aspire to being a professional writer to message me “hi” on Instagram at 10 PM and then ghost forever) is suddenly “on streaming” and everyone is watching it. The film is extremely shitty, with the worst green screen you’ve ever seen, but is buzzy because some members of the supporting cast have since become famous. It’s being screened in theaters. I go to see it and am seated in front of comedians Kate Berlant and John Early, who both walk out halfway through. After they leave an usher walks through the aisles and gives everyone a check for $100

1) Borg Cube meets Union Station sounds EPIC!
2) UGH. Every time "first college boyfriend" makes you feel real contemporary-life emotions, remember that he is a dang drag.

Just remembered that in the midst of a grinding anxiety dream the other night, ritchey and GARY-19 showed up!
I saw them from afar in a sauna, a strange huge sauna comprised of multiple large rooms where people were standing around chatting, fully clothed. I felt really relieved to see them and thought "oh I'll swing by and say hello in a bit", but then didn't because it turned into some other anxiety thing.
hi sauna friends <3

random aside, but while in Helsinki 2 years ago I went to the Kulttuurisauna, A++++. but on the way there, I bumped into my A*rbnb host, who upon me asking her if she'd ever been to it, told me no self-respecting Finn would go to a communal sauna as they all have their own, or at least their building does. no idea if it's true but I think about the way she said often, I feel like I actually offended her. wonder what the Finnish sauna scene is like these days…

Speaking from my own time in Finland: yes, all Finns have their own personal sauna and/or building sauna, even in regular old “not fancy” buildings. Imagine being in a semi-shitty NYC apartment & there’s a door that would seem like it’s the bathroom or maybe a closet, but instead IT’S A SAUNA. So you just hang out with your friends & drink long drinks in the sauna, then go out & stand on your tiny balcony in a towel in the frigid winter air to cool off, then hop back in. I also found it VERY amusing that you could buy birch branches in the grocery store right next to the frozen pizza!

Various dream notes:
I looked outside and it was snowing. I screamed like a full horror scream. Then I saw a goldfish swim through the air.
Zombie story, but combined with robots. I peeked outside the abandoned school building we were in and on the roofs of other buildings, there were large, spherical "eyes"/guns aiming their yellow beams this way and that.

I was on the back of a train looking at the last small, flat cart, which held a young boy. The train was going up and down hills and the carts would fly into the air before landing lightly back down on the tracks. Then I saw a wolf run up and snatch the boy off of the train.

Weird one about driving through the "suburbs of Los Angeles" but they were more like the banlieue of Paris, full of weird modernist architectural monstrosities. We pulled over because we wanted to visit the "Cathedral of Creativity," which was this amazing po-mo nightmare styled after the colorful onion-skin domes of Moscow's St. Basil's Cathedral, except skewed and sideways in a fun '90s way that evoked the golden age of Klasky-Csupo cartoons. Inside there were large-scale stained glass windows of the Budweiser Clydesdale horses and a little San Francisco-style trolley-car designed as a listening experience for The Who's "Quadrophenia." I waited in line to get a pressed penny made (I collect them) but the attendant left before I could give her my money.

My pet lizard (i dont have one) was on my bed with me, when my cat (i dont have one) came up and sat near. Suddenly, the cat lunges at the lizard and put half the lizards body into its mouth. I try to yell but cant because i took a sleeping pill and am too sleepy-weak to do so. I then decide to try to get my partners attention by thrashing my legs, but...also paralyzed from the sleeping pill. Freaky!

Do you get that night terror thing where you’re semi-conscious but your body is totally frozen? Happens to me when I’m VERY exhausted, like after a long flight.

This used to happen to me a lot, but for some reason hasn't recently. I think it's called sleep paralysis? It's really scary, especially when you try to talk/scream (!) and nothing comes out. But after awhile I got used to it and found it weirdly relaxing. Like, it lets you enjoy your sleep in real time, instead of just waking up hours later feeling like no time has passed.

I have had this, both the scary version and the peaceful one. The peaceful one happens ONLY during daytime naps. It is the best feeling, enjoying being asleep!!! At night it becomes a terror. I don’t know why they are so different!

Haven't had it in a while but yes, I sometimes get sleep paralysis and the not-being-able-to-scream thing is scary. Especially if you see/feel that "presence" at the end of the bed.

The other night I woke up from a terrible dream. Roni and I were over at Siegfried and Roy's house (!) AKA Little Bavaria. Siegfried came in the room with a tray of tea for us followed by a white tiger. I had my bare feet up on the sofa and right as Siegfried was lighting a crystal encrusted candle the tiger started running its mouth along my feet. Then it started growling. My heart was racing I was so terrified. Siegfried started talking to the tiger the way someone would talk to a house cat, "Stop it, leave my guest alone. Go outside and find a bird!" - The tiger snarled at him and then turned back to me and I woke up! ----- A little backstory here I have been feeling really sad that Roy Horn of Siegfried and Roy passed away recently and in post-TigerKing world no one even noticed or cared. Apparently I care a lot! LOL.

I dream of a [What are your neighbors watching?] thread. Going on walks at night you can usually catch a glimpse of what at a least a few living rooms have screening. The past few nights I saw an old NBA game being rewatched and someone playing some sort of modern fighting Ninja game.

Once upon a time, I'd take a certain bus to a certain stop in St. John's for thrice-weekly band practice. St. John's had(/s?) a particular quasi-suburban, frozen-in-the-nineties vibe. In the fall, I'd walk to practice past house after house and see people inside eating dinner and watching football. It was banal yet magical to see the whole neighborhood seemingl engaged in the same activity, like a theater of coziness and safety.
I remember someone telling me that when they traveled to somewhere, maybe in Scandinavia, that no one had curtains on their front windows and after dinner, everyone would walk around and peep into others' front rooms. Is that true?
