I bravely listened to Fiona's newest (brave bc I generally do not listen to new music) and really love it. It's very uniquely her—she has this whole syncopated soundscape, based on the natural rhythms of language that is not fashion but style.

Her poetry is as risky and courageous as they are saying. I'm rolling my eyes at reviewers who sensationalize the sexual assault she endured as a child, or use that to call her "sympathetic." I think her music connects strongly with people who have experienced abuse because she is open about her struggle to accept herself, warts and all. Critics call her "defiant," which is a really upside-down way to say that she stands up for herself despite being punished for doing so.

Also her flow is so funky and borderline awkward that I said to myself, "she's just like Eminem!"

Cocker is pausing the song and telling you to freeze or to "make a funny shape" at the pauses.

I have also been listening to a lot of Ryuichi Sakamoto and because of that spotify recommended me these Hiroshi Yoshimura albums "Green" and "Music for 9 Postcards." They are very mellow and relaxing and that is about the only mood I can handle sonically these days. Good to work to. But I don't pay for spotify and getting interrupted by the horrible ads while listening to this mellow 80s ambient music is a whole experience.

It’s yet another streaming platform!!! But they only do arthouse/international/classic cinema and it’s only ever 30 movies at a time with some real good “video store employee” type context and recommendations.

I like that Weyes Blood! She has such a strong identity, and I feel protective of her bc we have an ex in common. Witch lullaby lady. Can't wait to hear her album with Tim Heidecker.

It sounds cool! I'm afraid I don't have the discipline for that sort of thing though. I can only stand watching the dumbest stuff these days and if I knew I only had 30 days to watch a Smart Movie I'd probably have a panic attack

Lol relatable!

I still can’t get over the thing that it’s somehow boring to watch a “smart” movie. As soon as literally any wonderful international or arthouse cinema experience begins I’m enraptured but the psychic hill I have to climb in order to press play in the first place is steep. We usually have to trick ourselves by saying “let’s just watch the first five minutes”

Ahh yeah. It' sometimes because I'm afraid it will be boring, but sometimes because I'm afraid it will be like, too good? And then I'll have to think about it a lot. I'm not often willing to sacrifice that much of my mental real estate I guess.

can't stop listening to this song accompanied by this weird video of people falling and barfing and dancing

it's amazing how an epic fails video compilation can become a celebration of humanity if you pair it with a good anthem

This was ALMOST too intense for me to finish. It also strangely gives me this emotional faith in humanity, which I cannot expain. Is it the song? Simply seeing humans interacting with each other?

It's good! I have been kind of into this band ("New pants band") for a long time but haven't kept up with them much. I mean the song is 4 years old but this the first time I've heard it haha.

Don't you think the singer sounds kind of like Jarvis?

Malcolm McLaren is so exciting—I love "D'Ya Like Scratchin'?" and the "Deep In Vogue" single. His music has such an expansive, pop culture vulture, voyeuristic quality.

I think I came around to him by reading some link between him and the Neneh Cherry song "Buffalo Stance."

Domestic update:
At breakfast today we’re listening to Crass (Best Before 1984). I was passing the gatefold jacket across the table to the kid so she could inspect the collages and the side C/D LP rolled out onto the floor. It didn’t break but it had picked up some static cling cat hair. I instinctively blew at the hair to brush it off but forgot that I was currently still chewing eggs. Eggs blasted all over the vinyl, cat hair still on there. I went to the sink and ran the LP under the water and dried it gently in a kitchen towel swaddle. Now the kids eyes are widening listening to the radicalized poetry slam of “Reality Asylum”.

I’ve been listening to the daily micropod “Everyday Joy & Pain” by our very own dear uncleboatshoes! It’s great. A nice break from constant terrible news to hear the background of a different song/band/musician every day.

YES! We listen to NOFX in the car on almost every tour that lasts longer than a week. I used to have a road case with Fat Mike’s autograph on it. My brother was a “guitar tech” for Everclear on their last tour before they were huge and Fat Mike came to see the opening bands (Bracket and Hagfish) at their bay-area show.

I’m going through a big box of high school era cassettes from my parents’ attic, so:
Sonic Youth and Beck’s contributions to the DGC holiday mix
Loren MazzaCane Connors
Addams Family soundtrack
Batman
Eric’s Trip 7”s dubbed
local demos
countless traded Nirvana rarities tapes
all the sub pop compilations
my horrible first band
Singles soundtrack

It all feels like work.

I’ve been thinking so much lately about the work soundtracks did in our generation. So powerful, like comps by the cool older sibling you wished you had. The Singles one was so huge for me hahaha learning about 20-somethings in the 90s when we were teens, what a delight

My early soundtrack staples: Batman Forever, Dumb and Dumber, Reality Bites, Clueless!! And, of course, Rocky Horror Picture Show, of which I received a radicalizing box set for Christmas from my friend who had a crush on me in 8th grade.

I've been listening to weirdo art performance band The Tubes almost daily (their first 2 records). The music is so bombastic and showy that it kinda feels like a musical (not my favorite thing) but the lyrics and concepts are great.

Last night I listened to Lana del Rey's "Honeymoon" for the first time in forever and I was proud that my singalong is more uniquely me/less LDR-influenced than in the past. Her style is so funny and unique, it is so easy to copy, but I always try to challenge myself by singing in my own way :)

Tubes trivia: they were negotiating an appearance on SNL in the late 70's but they insisted on playing several songs in a row, to show off how tight their transitions were.

Big soundtracks of my life:

Can't Hardly Wait (an Absolute Salad: Replacements, Run DMC, Smashmouth, Blink-182??)
Empire Records (Cranberries, Edwyn Collins, Evan Dando, Toad the Wet Sprocket)
Clueless (Smoking Popes, MUFFS, Beastie Boys, Supergrass)
Godzilla (that Puff Daddy song where Tom Morello plays the guitar part from "Kashmir")
Dangerous Minds (just for the Coolio song)
