Has anyone here heard this music podcast? This one:

West Coast Fog

yourfriendclaire had a good description of it the other day, I'll let her fill you in, but it's a great antidote to doom scrolling or really anything that's keeping you from a experiencing a gentle and hopeful feeling.

Oh, what did I say? I think it's like...ASMR New Age soft-journalism? He plays deep cut New Age cassettes from around the world/time and talks about them in a very whisper-quiet tone from remote locations he describes in great detail (on a sailboat in Catalina, the Muir Woods, upstate New York etc). It's very soothing and the music is great but you also learn a lot about experimental music and rare instruments and the like. For heads!

What podcasts are y'all listening to?

I really like New Models, it really helps me frame big-picture art/culture/tech ideas:

https://newmodels.io/filters/nm-podcasts

And occasionally I like to dig into the archive of Erik Davis' Expanding Mind podcast—he's such a high scholar of the weird and has had some great guests:

https://techgnosis.com/category/podcast/

Did we already do a podcast thread? Suddenly I feel like I'm repeating myself...

I don't think we have?

I like Ologies, which is interviews with various scientists. It's upbeat stories about how people arrived in their fields and what kinds of weird things their work involves.

I sometimes dip into You Were Wrong About, which is kind of pop culture kind of history deep dive.

In the past I've listened to hours and hours of You Must Remember This, stories about classic hollywood.

I can't really listen to podcasts because I can't listen to people talking while working/coding (I can't process any of the words), and then when I'm not working/coding I'm usually not listening to anything. If I'm painting a room or driving a long distance I can listen to podcasts, but that's pretty rare. I listen to Blink-155 (my friend Josiah's Blink 182 podcast) once in a while because it's funny. I was a guest on it once.

I was listening to Everyday Joy and Pain every day when it was happening, uncleboatshoes where you at?

meadows I love You Must Remember This!

The Manson series was incredible. She’s a gifted researcher and I love how essayistic each episode is. I’m sure there’s a print volume in the works? Missed opportunity if not. I have a slightly hard time with her diction, but I’m ashamed to even say that because who am I to judge how someone talks?

In lighter times I also very much enjoy Who Weekly, which is a very fun trash podcast about C-List celebrities (influencers, Hallmark movie cast members, children of famous people, lesser reality TV stars, etc) that is also, as a consequence, about media, perception, and American low culture:

She has a very particular voice and pace of speaking that I also found slightly strange at first, but over time I got used to it. She did write a book, Seduction, Sex, Lies and Stardom in Howard Hughes's Hollywood! She must be writing more, right?

Oh I didn't know that! Well, she should write more books, for sure.

alexshred420 I also don't listen to podcasts, really. Only when driving one hour or more, but we've been listening to LA Podcast while making and eating breakfast lately.

I mostly listen to podcasts while doing things like cleaning the bathroom or walking. Can't do it if I'm working or thinking, and driving is mostly music time. But for those select times I do like to hear someone telling me a story.

Anyone have any idea who does the first song, about Pike Place market, on the "West Coast Fog 3/12/19 - Music in Circular Motions" episode? I can't find detailed episode notes anywhere.

alex About 20 minutes in he says it's a group called Music By Design, richjensen, you know anything about these people? I think he says the song is called "Marketable Maneuvers," but he mumbles the first word...

Apparently it's from a cassette released out of Seattle sometime in the 80s. I'd guess later 80s.

Rad. This reminds me of Wall of Voodoo, DEVO, and a little Algebra Suicide. Nerdy, but cool.

Did you see it's on Discogs too?

It's neat that after a few months away I thought to log in here a couple hours after joni asked me a question. Very efficient system. Unfortunately I don't have any recollection of Music by Design. Putting my ears onto them now. Will share anything that turns up after I ask around.

I have listened to and thought about podcasts far too much over the last 15 years or so. Mostly the same ones with a couple of people like me: American men my age talking about stuff I might talk about, a bit like listening to a mirror.

I keep inching like a glacier toward being involved in producing one or several. Was actually talking to some people about getting a cluster of them going yesterday in association with the Co-op. Thinking they would be a good way to connect people with music. Like: the opposite of algorithms.

(Or are we just mortal algorithms?)

I mostly follow the news and dream about different outcomes through podcasts. Lately I have been captured by the Bad Faith political podcast. Briahna Joy Gray is one of the most astute and humane observer/critics of American potential and Virgil Texas as her gonzo nihilistic clown freak foil make for a charming brew. I wish it were live and on every day.

Her 'hitting a brick wall' interview with Chomsky last week was sad and astonishing. Time for that old mushroom to step back.

I really wantch-y'all to get a better world on. Still believin'!

(I likes me shows...)

Discogs reveals Music By Design was mixed at Crow Studios which is operated by John Nelson who has posted a phone number here http://www.johnnelsonmusic.com/contact.html.

Hi richjensen!

Does anyone in this bar listen to my girls of Gaslit Nation? It is a podcast by a duo that includes a scholar of authoritarianism, Sarah Kendzior, and an expert in Ukrainian politics, Andrea Chalupa.

Sarah Kendzior is one of these brilliant souls who has been ringing the alarm against Trump for years. She has a book. I personally have not read a book for years but I do read all the tweets...

Bonus: each episode begins with a new found-sound collage that is fit for an art gallery or dance floor but they just put them together out of love for America.
