oh fuck yeah, frog time! I love them so much.

I'm Pseudacris crucifer, called the spring peeper! I am one of the first frogs to wake up from winter hibernation in eastern North America. When I wake up to that winter water melting into a nice marsh or vernal pool, the first thing I want to do is MATE! We stay in the wettest parts of the woods, but not too close to a lake or river because we don't want the fish to eat our eggs.

I possess secret knowledge of how to freeze my body during the cold winter without hurting myself. My organs know how to push out all their water into certain spaces in my body where it can freeze safely. My cells are all held up with sweet sugar until it's safe to thaw out again.

I am only 1" long!!

Fact: I had a wild-caught pet toad named Mr Toad for two or three years in grade school. He lived in a 20 gallon tank and ate many crickets. The first time I saw him moult I fell into an hysterical horror. But soon learned it’s normal for Mr. Toad to eat his own skin from his mouth to his toes!

I've been reading about frog and salamander spawning/eggs for a project I'm working on and learned about vernal pools- temporary ponds that arise in the spring. What a beautiful phrase!!!

Frog thread / camping thread special crossover episode! We just got home from a couple nights’ camping out in the Los Padres National Forest (Ojai-adjacent). Our camping spot was creekside and gave us an excellent perch for frogspotting!

Camping in the winter - what a concept.

It was a little ambitious—nice and sunny during the day, especially once we hiked out of the canyons, but it dipped down into the 40s at night and was VERY windy. Our little tent was rattling and howling all night. Totally worth it, but we probably won't do it again until early Spring, I think.

The coldest I ever camped was 19 degrees Fahrenheit outside and I definitely needed a warmer bag. Now I have a -10 bag and it's pretty toasty in all conditions. Still not trying to camp in the ice or snow, though.
