1. From one of my favorite documentarians—the same soul that brought you “An Ice Cream Program,” it’s the Rick Sebak masterpiece:

2. I saw a popular tweet today that said, and I quote “ everyone has a sandwich that they think about for the rest of their life.” Please share yours here:

Mine is honestly probably the Cran-Temp-Avo at that place in Boise Idaho. Jona do you remember that sandwich? It was so good and a very weird concept I would never have come up with on my own. Cranberry sauce, tempeh, and avocado?? What the fuck. It was SO good. Some vegenaise on there. I believe it was served on some sort of a roll. I looked forward to it every time we'd go to Boise.
It's not necessarily my "favorite" sandwich although it is very good. But just in terms of "hmm I am thinking of a sandwich" I would say that is the one I "think of" the most.

A Sandwich I Have Loved:
When I was studying abroad in Paris & very broke I would go on long walks around the city and end up now & again in corny tourist quarters, as one does. There was a to-go sandwich shop in the small park next to Shakespeare & Company, across the River from the Notre-Dame, really just In The Shit, that catered primarily to tourists and school groups, and they sold a chicken nugget and mayonnaise sandwich on fine French baguette that became my most enjoyed garbage pleasure.

Another sandwich I loved during this era was one I invented and ate at home:
Croissant
Smoked salmon
Brie
Poached egg
YIKES
I am vegan now

ritchey I don’t remember it, but it sounds great. Where was it? Not the co-op?
My sandwich is a coconut bacon BLT made in a super thin chapati wrap that really turns the thing into a single entity rather than a thing made up of parts. It’s in Montreal and I’ve loved it for a long time.

My sandwich is a baguette with brie and some very fancy jam. It's so simple, I could obviously just make one, but would it be the same? Does one deserve to eat such a ridiculous item for no reason? At home? Actually, yeah, I should probably just make it.

Go-to 2004 sandwich: The quintessential veggie-deluxe sandwich-- full on mountain of alfalfa sprouts, avocado, cucumber, red onion, tomato, humus... PLUS bacon. You could come at it two ways: Either order a blt and ask for a bunch of extra veggies or just wow your server by ordering the hippie pile and demanding bacon.

joni it was that place called, like, "Koffee Klatch" or something? I feel like I first encountered it on an early Dear Nora tour, then I exposed you to it later, then even later I exposed Gary to it, which was sort of a nice full circle moment because he grew up in Boise. "Sandwich enjoyed by ALL"

DC Veggie in Portland has a pretty nice vegan BLT that I liked to eat when I worked downtown.
Grand Central has this egg salad croissant thing that's good as well.
I can't think of one that's like, changed my life, though.
What IS a sandwich anyway?

Mine is the "Avocado Sunrise" from the now defunct Harvest restaurant in Denver. Mountain of alfalfa sprouts, mountain of avocado, very sharp cheddar, some kind of spread (?), on hippie bread baked in house.
A runner up is the vegan TLT&A at Half & Half (RIP.)

I think about Half and Half sandwiches, broadly, all the damn time.

I saw this adorable doc a couple of years ago—really good film about regional cultures!
There's a deli franchise in Vegas called Capriotti's where you can order a sub "the Bobbie"—turkey/tofurkey, cranberry sauce, and Thanksgiving-style dressing/stuffing.
Bar Bar in Portland... My favorite veggie burger and fries of all time. The patty is basically a large pakora.
McDonald's cheeseburger minus burger. That's the actual soul-haunting quotient.
Half and Half closed? Bogus!

Related: I surprised myself this past year or so by realizing that American cheese singles are not plastic tragedies but in fact the perfectly-engineered, the ONLY choice of melty cheese for a grilled sandwich.

I've had variations of this sandwich from many a hippie deli/co-op. I currently associate it with the natural sisters cafe in joshua tree as my most recent source. I can't think of a more perfect combo.

it's a very very good sandwich. Mountain of sprouts! I remember getting into sprouts in the early 90s and thinking it was cosmopolitan

Oh boy, all these sound so great! RCH The Bobbie sounds so good, and great name. meadows, how could I forget that Half & Half sandwich!?

kmikeym reminded us of the time the Half & Half started serving beer, so we went that day and bought all of them:

ritchey I fixed it for you. All you have to do is wait a second after typing the first letter after the @ and then it’ll give you a dropdown to select the user. It’s cute that it makes it red and that’s it. It’s not a link, it doesn’t “notify” the user, it just makes it red.
