Guess The Movie
Re: Guess The Movie
I haven't won one yet. I knew a couple but was late to the thread.
I thought Taken was a pretty good guess but apparently not.

Re: Guess The Movie
This movie is fantastic. It’s about a child who was raised in the evangelical church to be a tiny boy pastor by his fervently religious/ruthless capitalist parents. He was a religious novelty in his youth and even conducted wedding ceremonies when he was six. By the time he’s in his twenties he’s fully a turned-on hippie guy who has abandoned the church, but he and his friends decide to make a documentary about how easy it is to bamboozle people into thinking you’re a holy man. He goes back on the tent revival circuit and gives these INCREDIBLE sermons, and is just raking in cash. Everything is shot handheld and Marjoe (he’s named after Mary and Joseph) talks the crew through everything they can expect from the evangelical culture, all the tricks of the trade and the scams he’s learned over the years from other tent revival pastors. It’s a wild glimpse into both hippie culture and American evangelical culture—they visit churches all over the US, from black gospel congregations (where Marjoe is like “the music is amazing”) to full-on speaking in tongues stuff.
Re: Guess The Movie
There is no way I would have guessed this movie if not for your hint and Google. I'm going to try to lob a softball...

Re: Guess The Movie
this is a very brain-dead response to this but i bet the people who made the children's cartoon Gravity Falls watched this documentary. one of the main antagonists in the show is like a megalomaniac child pastor named lil gideon. it's a great show... for kids ... and grownups tooyourfriendclaire wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2020 1:55 pm This movie is fantastic. Re: Guess The Movie
Haha. We watched a few episodes because Korn had piano students who were like I WANNA PLAY THE GRAVITY FALLS SONG!!! It was cute and fun. I'd watch more.
And I guess it goes without saying that this doc is now also on my list?

Re: Guess The Movie
Do you refer to him as "Korn" often? I did a confused double-take thinking Bakersfield's finest were teaching piano...
Re: Guess The Movie
I secretly hoped you would. It amuses me to refer to him as Korn in writing. I do not believe I have ever called him Korn in person, no.

Re: Guess The Movie
Ritchey, I'm sorry but.......... You're correct!!!
I just saw it last night, amazing film, huge. Gonna watch all the rest of them now (4 total, released between 1978–2016). JJ Abrams remastered it, so maybe he's trying to get in on the franchise and another one will come out.
PS How cool is old buddy's ice cream man with leather vest look?

Re: Guess The Movie
WOW!!!! I AM SO EXCITED I WON!!!! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS POSSIBLE
It is such a weird, wonderful film. We watched it because Gary got it on VHS from the media sale at his job, I believe he paid one dollar for it or else it was free. I had no idea there were more of them nor that the franchise continued up into the present day NOR that JJA remastered the orig!!! I truly thought of it as a weird 78 film lost to the sands of time. This is huge info for me; I am also putting these on the list. If JJA made a new one it would be so fun.
Ok now I gotta think of a good one, damn
his look is so good

Re: Guess The Movie
Spoiler: for a movie so unique and evidently largely improvised/written on the fly, the tuning fork thing is so satisfyingly technological. Abstract and specific enough to be believable, like taking the concept of resonance to a wild level. Simple special effects used to create something that really feels out-of-this-world!

I dunno if this one will be way too easy or way too hard--YOU TELL ME

I confess to having done a small amount of sleuthing on this one but I believe it is Steven Spielberg's "Duel"
Re: Guess The Movie
Either that or Maximum Overdrive

It looks like Patrick Wilson but despite him being underwater a lot in that movie I don't think it's Aquaman
Does he go underwater in the Phantom of the Opera movie?
