Snow/Ice Storms

Was nice at first, but now we've been without power for two days and a pipe burst so we don't have water either.

Currently camped at my mom's house using power/shower/working for a bit, but it's pretty dang cold at our house. Benny the cat is not happy.

I hate it, always, when it turns to ice. It's so stupid, not in any way fun and ruins everything good like running water, power, wifi, mobility!

It feels like to stay in Portland we'll need to have generators and gas masks and air purifiers. I was going to go check the mail at the office downtown today, but it was the epicenter of the major gas leak and was cordoned off for blocks. I decided if my office blew up I would sell the house and leave. it didn't explode, so now I'll start researching generators?

yes, I cannot stop thinking about where and how should I be trying to be getting situated in the face of impending climate collapse. did you all see ProPublica's climate map? most of my life, my parents had been planning to retire to the county that is ranked most at risk of climate impacts (Beaufort County, SC), so I think they've given up that dream. I miss Southern California so so terribly but I'm increasingly leaning towards doubling down staying in New York for the foreseeable future for these reasons.

It's such a painful era. I feel the only relief I can depend on lies within my own grasp of hope.

I hope that we can all prepare for disasters to the best of our ability, and that we'll be in community with neighbors who we look out for and vice versa.

It's always been in the back of my mind that the Great Lakes region, for all its serious environmental challenges, will fare better than others in a warming climate. As much as I can't see my future here, that Propublica map shows that my county will receive certain economic benefits due to shifting crop yields.

Now I'm fixated on envisioning a better future here that includes rewilding Lake Erie and surrounding wetlands, while accommodating increased agricultural development--and population demands. This is an area that has seen population drops but is likely to open to the next Great Migration.

I love Southern California so much; it'll be heartbreaking to leave it, eventually. I keep hoping a fluke in the atmospheric rivers will turn Los Angeles into an Eden.
