Hahahahahaaaaa That's their local hub! They eat there every Sunday with their crew of weirdos.
The sisters who run that place are amazing, TRUE geniuses and delights. I have a t-shirt with their faces on it.
How funny to run into my parents in that way!

I know! We were talking about linking up, and it would have been truly wonderful to see them in their dusty mountain zone, but I got such bad altitude sickness and had to beat it ASAP. I still enjoyed seeing them on the wall and eating an extremely dank sandwich under their gaze.

Fresh, homemade bread, piled with thick-cut veggies and cheese, accompanied by cup of homemade veggie soup and some kind of hippie-ish tortilla chips. Regular customer vibes, like they were holding the last cookie in case on certain person stopped in, and very wholehearted friendliness. Just one of those small town cafes where it's all fresh and big and everyone is a buddy. I wasn't a buddy but by the time I finished the huge sando I was chatting with a staffer about what books we were reading. Kind vibes!

Oh, dank meaning good! I was imagining this dark musty damp sandwich... Man, I've been away too long.

oh no, it was the opposite of that!

I actually hate the word "dank", with the result of it creeping into my vocab with increasing frequency

Bluegrass Festival, yes! Veggie hot dogs, yes (I forgot about that)! That year Bluegrass broke into the mainstream because of "O Brother." It was p-fun. I mostly remember the Béla Fleck having a drum machine device that was soooooooo stupid.

Jona, your description made me remember that one of my old high school buddies was a major Fleck head and played mandolin in his baby noise band, so thank you for that. It was cooler than it sounds, you'll just have to believe me!

when i was a kid we often went to this huge late summer weekend music thing called the 'strawberry bluegrass festival', aging hippies and their kids camping in mass numbers and vibing out to music like this, i remember the name 'bela fleck' from a lot of these festivals but could not even begin to describe what it sounded like. i know it's banjo music? doesn't he have like a high tech banjo of some kind?

Bela Fleck is VERY weird musically, like experimental jazz fusion or something. He is always at the telluride bluegrass fest but playing shit that is not even remotely related to any b-grass tradition. But then he’ll come on at the end of the night when people from all different bands jam out together and he’ll just SHRED foggy mountain breakdown or cripple creek or wabash cannonball. I don’t know what his “deal” is, in terms of his aesthetic life journey. I met him at age 10 and my dad put a picture of us meeting in the newspaper

“He’s always at” = he was always at between 1985-1999 and I have zero info on his activities after that date

Hardcore way to go vegan: Everything non-vegan is gum: gum milk, gumfurkey, gum-based egg substitute for baking, gum scramble, pulled gum sandwiches... PITCHES WELCOME!
